I was born in New Haven, Connecticut, during the Civil
Rights movement into a family with four older sisters and parents
who loved connecting to the city. We regularly had all sorts of
characters--wonderful people--around our dinner table, from actors,
to academics, to friends and many people who made our family their
family. As the youngest I was determined to get noticed and soon
found out that I got a lot of attention by drawing and being funny.
People liked my caricatures ("Carriecatures"), portraits
and landscapes and I loved doing them. So, I continued and graduated
with a B.A. in the Fine Arts from Franklin and Marshall College
in 1988, and went on to receive my MFA in Painting at the Graduate
School of Figurative Arts, New York Academy of Art in 1992.
While I have the foundation of a classical art education,
my trip to Israel in the summer of 1990, my trip to teach art in
Nicaragua for the summer of 1994, and my trip to Puerto Rico in
1997, inspired me to change my color palette. The equatorial sun
beating down on the colorful villages and people changed how I saw
the world. I began to paint with bright colors straight from the
tube. In my landscapes, finally, I was able to combine my academic
training with my lighter side.
Currently, I live and work in Central Maine, and am
influenced daily by the beauty around me. I create landscapes of
my surroundings, and portraits and "Carriecatures" of
people in Maine. My art studio is located in downtown Waterville,
Maine. For a scheduled appointment please contact me at chaberstock@roadrunner.com
